Vocab for 90's and Early 2000's Unit

TermDefinition
NAFTA (North America Free Trade Agreement) Created a free trade zone with Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Removed barriers for trade between the 3 nations.
Bill Clinton 42nd President of the United States. President from 1992-2000.
Oslo Accord An agreement between Israel an Palestine for a peaceful transition to a potential long term solution for peace in the region. Mediated by Bill Clinton.
Good Friday Agreement Agreement between Ireland and the United Kingdom to end fighting over Northern Ireland. Mediated by President Clinton
Bosnia Intervention Military campaign led by the United States and NATO. Stopped the Serbian army from pushing further into Bosnia, and helped end the mass killings and concentration camps in Bosnia.
Improving America's Schools Act (1994) Education reform and investment bill signed by President Clinton. Helped fund programs to help children in disadvantaged schools.
Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (1994) Gun control legislation passed by Congress and signed by Clinton. Mandated federal background checks on firearms sales. And a 5 day waiting period when buying a gun.
Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (1994) Law signed by President Clinton to invest in more police officers and other law enforcement resources. As well as assault weapons ban and new laws to protect women and children.
"Goldilocks Economy" Phrase to describe the economy during the Clinton administration. Perfect economy where large growth did not cause high inflation or high unemployment.
Budget Surplus Under the Clinton the United States government earned more money than it spent. Allowing it to lower the national debt, and issue tax breaks to Americans.
Camp David Summit A conference held with Palestinian and Israeli leaders to create a longer lasting solution to the conflict between the two nations. Clinton was not able to end this conference with a agreement.
Somalia Civil War Intervetion President Clinton deployed military forces to Somalia during their civil war.
Dot-com bubble A stock market bubble and collapse caused by many internet based companies from falling down at one time.
Impeachment Of President Clinton President Clinton was impeached by Congress for making false statements to investigators and hiding evidence. He was not found guilty and removed from office.
1993 World Trade Center Bombing A group of terrorists attempted to destroy the World Trade Center by using a truck filled with explosives. While the bomb did go off killing 6 people, it did not bring down any buildings.
NATO Expansion Following the fall of the Soviet Union Clinton pushed for the expansion of NATO by adding new countries. Poland, Hungary, and Czech Republic were added in 1997.
Kosovo Intervention Similar to the Bosnia intervention. U.S. and NATO military forced were used to stop Serbian troops from attacking minority groups in Kosovo.
Globalization Process in which all the economies of the world begin interacting at levels that require global connections to function. Creating massive global economies, not regional or national ones only.
