Custody The legal right to raise and govern a kid.
Alimony After divorce or separation, one spouse pays the other.
Parenting plan Agreement between divorced parents that decides custody, visitation, and decision-making for their children
Parental Discipline how parents teach their children right from wrong
Child Abuse Someone hurts a child or doesn't take care of them properly
Adoption Legally becoming parents to a child who isn't biologically theirs.
Foster Care Temporary arrangement where children live with foster parents
Stepparents A Person who marries someone who is a parent after the death or divorce of the other parent and has no biological relationship to the child.
Parental Figure Someone who assumed the responsibilities of a parent
Prenuptial Agreement A contract made before marriage that decides what happens to money and property if the marriage ends.
Emancipation Child is free from the custody of your parents (or guardians) depending on the state, average age is 18.
Social Security Government issued insurance policy for retirement, providing benefits based on contributions made during employment.
Medicare Federal health insurance for seniors and disabled persons, covering hospital and medical bills.
Medicaid Federal/State program covers hospital, medication, and dental care for low-income and disabled
Amendment A minor change or addition to a piece of legislation/law
Constitution List of key laws and rights people and the government have.
First Amendment Guarantees certain freedoms, including freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and the right to petition the government.
14th Amendment Requires equal protection of the laws for all citizens and prevents states from denying citizens of life, liberty, or property
Absolute Free from any limitations
Freedom of Speech and Expression People can speak their minds without fear of punishment by Government
Obscenity Material that treats sex or nudity in an offensive or lewd manner and lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value
Defamation The action of damaging the good reputation of someone; slander or libel.
Commercial speech Speech or writing on behalf of a business with the intent of earning revenue or a profit
Incitement Aimed at causing or encouraging impending illegal behavior and is likely to cause or encourage such behavior
Slander Spoken Defamation or the spread of reputation-damaging false information
Libel Written Defamation or the spread of reputation-damaging false information
Public Forum Any public place, such as a park or street, where First Amendment expression rights can be used in an appropriate manner
