Vietnam Terms

Tet Offensive Surprise attack against the Americans by the Vietcong. Occurred in January 1968 during the Tet (Lunar New Year). 100 cities were attacked but the American forces managed to stop it. It had a huge affect on American morale.
Guerilla warfare Techniques used by the Vietnamese forces to attack Americans. Involved ambushes.
Protest an expression or declaration of objection, disapproval, ordissent, often in opposition to something a person ispowerless to prevent or avoid
The Gulf of Tonkin The North Vietnamese allegedly attacked an American ship in the gulf of Tonkin.
NVA and Vietcong North Vietnamese Communist Forces
President Lyndon B. Johnson Became president after the assassination of JFK. Was directly involved with the war in Vietnam and his popularity greatly decreased as the war raged on.
The Women’s movement from 1966 to 1970; wanted equal rights. Started to form during the Civil Rights movement.
President Nixon elected in 1968 and tried to put an end to the war with his ideas of training and equipping the South Vietnamese soldiers to do most of the fighting (Vietnamization). 1968 however endured some of the most violence during the war.
Civil Rights and enlistment More blacks were starting to enlist in the war since they were living in poverty and enlisting was their only option.
John F Kennedy assassination occurred in November of 1963. Greatly affected American morale
Media involvement in Vietnam Pictures of napalm bombings and innocent civilians being killed. These pictures were spread internationally.
Communism Political system that eliminated the class system and had restrictions on what citizens were able to do. The real reason that the Vietnam War had started was the fear of Communism spreading throughout Southeast Asia.
The Draft The mandatory conscription of young men to fight in Vietnam. The draft was discontinued in 1973.
Martin Luther King Jr. assassination was assassinated in 1968, before he died he protested against the war saying that the problems in America should be fixed before the war in Vietnam should take place.
Vietnamization President Nixon’s idea to equip, train and increase the South Vietnamese forces to do more of the fighting in Vietnam. Throughout this transition, the US also continued air raids and bombing runs.
Robert Kennedy Was the U.S. Attorney General under President Johnson. Ran for president in 1968 but was assassinated.
Democratic Convention of 1968 was a debate about finding a peace resolution. Outside however there were fierce riots which were instigated by the Mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley.
Richard Daley Mayor of Chicago during the Democratic Convention of 1968; was said to have incited riots by mixing in secret police in order to create riots and violence.
Napalm An incendiary chemical that was used in bombs during the Vietnam War.
Hubert Humphrey Was Vice President under Lyndon B. Johnson; Ran for president in 1968 but lost to Nixon.
My Lai Massacre A 1968 search and destroy mission that destroyed a village and killed more than 350 South Vietnamese civilians. Was publicized in the media.
Teenage soldiers most soldiers in Vietnam were young men who had dropped out of high school.
