what was the reformation? the reformation began in germany in the 16th centuary as a protest against the abuses in the catholic church.

explain the wealth of the church? by 1500, the catholic church had great wealth. in germany many people were jealous of this wealth.
explain the influence of the renaissance? the rennaissance encouraged people to qusetion everything . many scholars could now read the bible for themselves. they criticized the catholic church and said that it was not following what was written in the bible
explain the abuses (corruption) of the catholic church nepotism ,simony, pluralism , absenteeism, bad orginisation
nepotism deffinition nepototism: many relations of nobels, cardinals and bishops were appointed to church offices or positions .
simony definition simony: this was the buying and selling of church positions .
pluralism definition pluralism: some cardinals and bishops had more than one diocese( area under control of a bishop). thid was called pluralism. each extra diocese provided more income or money for them.
absenteeism definiton cardinals and bishops who had more than one diocese could only live in one of them ,so they were absent from others. this was called absenteeism as they neglected ther duties in absenteee diocese
bad organisation definition . popes , cardinals and bishops behaved like princes . some built great palaces such as cardinal wolseys building of hampton court place in england. . preist were often undeducated and could not read the bible or could not preach
explain the power of the kings and princes? they wanted to control the power of the infulence of the catholic church
explain the printing press criticism of the catholic church was spread quickly through books and pamhlets
name a reformer martin luther
who was martin luther? martin luther was born in eislebenin germany in 1483. he joined the augustinian order to become a monk and preist. he later became a professor of theology (study of god)at wittenburg university in saxony.
what did luther beleive - going to heaven he read that 'the just man shall live by faith alone' he said only faith in god would allow a person to go to heaven - this was called justification by faith
what sparked the reformation john tetzel came to wittenburg to preach and sell indulgences . tetzel said that anyone can buy an indulgence to get to heaven.
what did luther do - 95 theses luther objected to tetzels preaching. he wrote 95 theses ( arguments) against the sale of indulgences
why did people support luther the 95theses were translated to german and were then printed . this made it much easier to spread luthers veiws all over germany
how did rome respond to luther he met cardinal cajetan . luther refused to change his ideas.luther had a public debate with john eck, a theologian). in the debate , luther questioned the authority of the pope.the pope sent a papal bull excommunicating luther .he burned the papal letter
what happened at the diet of worms charles V became holy roman emperor in 1519. charles called luther to the diet (parlement) of worms , near mainz germanyl; luther spoke befor the diet and refused to withdraw his teachings
what happened at wartburg castel on luthers way home he was captured by soilders of fredrick the wise. that year he translated the new teastement and the old testement into german
the peace of augsburg 1555 a civil and religious war broke out in germany and lasted nine years. the peace of augsburg (1555) brought the war to an end.

the council of trent ? pope paul III callled the cardinals/bishops together in the council of trent, they ruled on faith /discipline. as a result , the catholic religion remained the most important religion in europe. thePOPEScontrolOVERtheCATHOLICchurch WASstrengthened.
