Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki The second use of an atomic weapon in war that resulted in the immediate 80,000 deaths
Manhattan Project The U.S. operation to develop an atomic bomb
Second Sino-Japanese War War between China and Japan from 1937-1945 that resulted in 20 million Chinese deaths
Battle of Iwo Jima Located on a Japanese island, it was the bloodiest battle in the war in the Pacific
Hideki Tojo Prime minister of Japan who ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor
Bushido Code A code of conduct that dictated samurai behavior, focused on honor
Meiji Restoration From 1868-1912 when the emperor was restored to power and there was a strong push to westernize Japan
Battle of Okinawa The last battle before the planned invasion of Japan
Daimyo Feudal Japanese lord who was a land owner and typically a noble
Battle of Midway 1942 battle that resulted in a loss for Japan and sunk 4 Japanese aircraft carriers
Natural Resources Resources that are drawn from nature and used with few modifications
Tokugawa Leyasu The founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan, which ruled from 1603 until the Meiji Restoration in 1868
Samurai A Japanese warrior whose name translates as "to serve"
Westernization of Japan The time in Japan that included adopting democratic forms of government, free market economic systems, and resulted in major contributions to Western science and technology
Military Training Involved bow, sword, spear and martial arts training from a young age to serve their daimyo
Nara Period A period from 710-784 AD that was influenced by Chinese culture, it ended when the emperor decided to move the capital
Philippines Campaign Began in 1942 when the Japanese took over the islands of the Philippines and ended in 1945 with their liberation
Industrialization The process of transforming the economy of a nation or region from a focus on agriculture to a reliance on manufacturing
Samurai A Japanese warrior whose name translates as "to serve"
Shogun The military leader of Japan. An overlord of all the Daimyos. In theory, he was responsible to the emperor. In reality, he ruled Japan
Doolittle Raids The U.S. bombing of 4 Japanese cities as a response to the attack on Pearl Harbor
War in the Pacific Major theatre of WWII that covered a large portion of the Pacific Ocean, East Asia, and Southeast Asia
Heian Period The Golden Age of Japanese cultural achievements, it ended when they lost power and rivals took control of the government
Bakufu/Shogunate Military governments ruled by a shogun
Manchuria and Manchukuo Dynasty A puppet state in Northeast China ruled for Japan
Tokugawa Shogunate Military dictatorship from 1603-1868 that brought on a period of peace
Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima The first use of an atomic weapon in war
Axis Powers Germany, Italy, and Japan
Mental Training Focused on self control and strict discipline, with training beginning as young as 5 years old
