| Term | Definition |

| 13th Amendment | Freed slaves. |
| 14th Amendment | Everyone born in the U.S are U.S citizens and naturalized here. |
| Freedman's Bureau | The goal was to provide food, clothing, health care, and education to African Americans and white refugees from the South. |
| Black Codes | Laws that sought to limit the rights of African Americans and keep them as landless workers. |
| Civil Rights Act of 1866 | All person born in the Unites States were citizens with full rights under the Constitution |
| Poll Tax | Required voters to pay to vote. They would pay $1 to $2. (35-70 in todays money) |
| Literacy Test | This test was made to ensure if African Americans could read and if they could; they could vote. |
| Grandfather Clause | You could vote if your ancestors voted prior to 1866 or 1867. |
| Enforcement Acts | Made it a federal offense to interfere with a citizens right to vote. |
| Scalawags | White men who had been locked out of pre civil war politics by their wealthier neighbors. |
| Carpet Baggers | Northerners that went to the South to improve their economic and political situations. |
| Segregation | Separation of individuals by race. |
| Civil Rights Act of 1965 | Guaranteed African American citizens the right to ride trains and use public facilities. |
| Free Enterprise | Freedom to run a buisness for profit with minimal regulation beyond what is necessary to protect public interest. |
| Mass Production | Making products in a large quantity. |
| Corporation | A group of ownership of investors to expand on open markets. |
| Monopoly | Complete control in a product. |
| Americanization | Programs or instuitions that helped newcomers. |
| Melting Pot | Different nationalities blended to create a single culture. |
| Collective Bargaining | Negotiating group with their employer for higher wages and better working conditions. |
| Knights of Labor | Worked for all trade. |
| Prohibition | The prohibition of alcholic beverages. |
| Muckrakers | Journalists who wrote about the corrupt side of businesses and public life. |
| Abotionilist | Someone that favors of slavery being abolished. |
| Advocate | A person that pleads the idea or cause. |
| Ally | A friendly nation. |
| Antebellum | Period before war. |
| Armada | A large fleet. |
| Suffrage | Legal right to vote. |
| Ratified | To get approved of. |
| Cede | Give over. |
| Boycott | A refusal to do something. |
| Assets | Values that are owned by a company. |
