Flashcard MODULE 7 New Challenges to Human Adaptation and Social Change

TermDefinition
Climate Change Refers to the increasing changes in the measures of climate over a long period of time – including precipitation, temperature, and wind patterns.
Global Warming Refers to the rise in global temperatures due mainly to the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Greenhouse Is a structural building with different types of covering materials, such as a glass or plastic roof & frequently glass or plastic wall. Receiving energy (in the form of light) from outside; the inside of greenhouse will heat & emit infrared radiation.
Greenhouse Effect Is a natural process that keeps the Earth warm enough for us to live. Gases like water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide in the air act like a cozy blanket, trapping heat from the sun and preventing it from escaping back into space.
Greenhouse Process When sunlight reaches the Earth, some of it warms the land and oceans. The rest bounces back into space as infrared energy.
Hybrid Cars They're a bit more expensive upfront, but many people like them because they pollute less. Eventually, we'll mostly use them, which will save money in the long run.
Nuclear Power Doesn't produce CO2. Needs a high priority to be placed on solving the nuclear waste problem.
Underground A method use to push oil out of wells.
Wind Power Is a renewable energy source that harnesses the kinetic energy of moving air to generate electricity.
Transnational Migration Migration from one nation-state another but participate simultaneously regarding social relations.
Transmigrants Are immigrants whose daily lives depend on multiple and constant interconnections across international borders and whose public identities are configured in relationship to more than one nation- state.
