Sovereignty The exclusive right to exercise supreme political authority over a geographic region, group of people, or ones self.
supply and demand when supplies become more plenitiful, prices tend to decrease. As supplies become more scarce, prices tend to incrrease. If demand drops, the price drops; if demand rises, the price rises.
Characteristics of state (blank)
Declaration of Independance a proclamation of independance of an aspiring state or states. The declaration was given to show why the U.S. was breaking away from Britain.
Articles of Confederation Form of government after the revolution, the first actually. Because it did not work, the constitution was created. Some problems with the articles were that states were abusing their powers and taxing too much, a militia could not be formed,and no united
Bicameral A legislature which consists of two chambers or houses. defining feature in the classic notion of mixed government. Tend to require concurrent majority to pass legislation.
Federalist papers A series of 85 articles arguing for the ratification of the US constitution. Primary source of interpretation of the constitution, they outlined the philosophy and motivation behind the documet.
sons of liberty The patriots in British North America before the Revolution. Issac Barre knew that they would resist a new tax. Through legislative resolutions, public displays, threats, and occasional violence, they were able to cause the act to be repealed. Whigs.
Constitution Convention May to september, 1787. To adress problems in the U.S. after the Revolution. Only intednded to revise the Articles of Confederation, but James Madison and Alexander Hamilton wanted a new government rather than just fix one. Then came the constitution.
Bill of rights a statement of certain rights that citizens should and want to have, and have. embedded in constitution to limit governments power to intervene in citizen's lives. The first ten ammendments in the constitution.
Legislative branch Responsible for making the laws. create lower courts, remove judges approve or reject apointment of judges.(Judicial) funds to carry out laws, override veto with 2/3 vote, remove pres. senate approves treaties. (executive)
Federalism a system of government in which a written constitution divides power between a central, or national, government and several regional governments. American government.
Democratic party (liberal - left wing) Progressive taxes, Medicar (assisting poor), Redistrabution of income, Anti-trust legislation, Labor, No censorship, Pro-choice, No state and religion, Protect homosexuals.
Republican (conservative, right wing) Lower taxes, No redistributing income, No gov. regulation of market choices, Business, Censorship, Pro-life, gov. and religion, No protect homosexuals.
Voting behavior many do not vote for simple resons mainly didn't register. Fewer younger people vote. The higher the education the more likely to vote. The more money, the more likely to vote.
Voting history Voters did not know about the candidate - Electors would keep from voting candidates from own state. Electoral votes determined by pop. to balance power of small and large states. People weren't educated so the electors would change the vote.
Presidential Duties Cheif of State, Cheife Executive, Cheif administrator, Commander and Chief, Chief Legislator, Chief Diplomat, Chief of Party, Chief Citizen.
Chief of State Ceremonial Head of Government (Queen of England)
Chief Exectutive Constitution's Executive Powers (checks and balances, veto, new supreme court justices)
Chief Administrator Director of Federal Government (boss of 2.7 million indaviduals)
Commander and Chief In control of the military forces in the U.S. (can send forces around U.S.)
Cheif Legislator Shape public policy (sets agendas for congress)
Chief Diplomat American Spokesman for the rest of the world (president's travels abroad for conferences)
Chief of Party Leader of political party (Bush - head of Republican party)
Chief Citizen President is expected to represent all the people (represents public interest over private interst)
