Describe what a Hoovervilles is? -Shack or shanty towns built during the Great Depression by the homeless.
Why did they name things after president Hoover such as hoovervilles, hoover blankets, hoover flags and hoover leather? - President Hoover's popularity decreased and was widely blamed for the Great Depression.
What was the Hawley Smoot Tariff? -Increased taxes on imported foreign goods.
How did the Hawley Smoot Tariff affect the economy? -European countries placed tariffs on American goods, destroyed trade with foreign nations, making the depression even worse.
When was the Hoover dam built, what was the original name and what state was it built in? -Started construction around 1931, Boulder Dam, built in Nevada.
Describe the "Dust Bowl" and how it affected the economy? Was it man made or natural or both and describe how come? -The Dust Bowl was an area that was hit with or severe drought. Man made because farmers started to abandon soil conservation, leading to severe soil erosion.
What is the bonus army? -Thousands of WW1 veterans/supporters marched to Washington D.C. to demand the early payment of bonuses .
How many terms did Roosevelt hold office for? -4 Terms
What is the Brain Trust? -A group of university professors that Roosevelt relied on to help him create the policies for his New Deal vision.
What are the 3 R's for FDR's new deal? And describe them. -Relief for people out of work, Recovery for businesses, Reform of the American Economy.
What month was FDR sworn in? What month are presidents sworn in now? Sworn in March. Current presidents are sworn in in January.
What Is the fireside chat? What was their purpose? -Radio addresses/talks that FDR used to reassure American people that everything would be okay.
What is the FDIC and what did it do? -Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. They insured bank deposits up to $2,500 (later increased to $5,000) If the bank failed, people wouldn't lose their deposited money up to the insured amount.
What was Executive order 6102? -The FDR required people to turn in any gold coins, gold bullion, or gold certificates to the Federal Reserve
What is a lame duck? -Ratified the 20th Amendment
What was the 20th amendment? -Moved up the swearing in of a president from March to January.
What was the 21st amendment? Repealed 18th amendment, ending prohibition.
Who did the AAA help? What was it? -Help farmers -Paid Farmers to produce less and encouraged better farming techniques.
Who did the NRA help? What was it? -Help For Industry - Created codes of fair competition, set standards for working hours, wages, prices, and limits of production.
Who did the PWA help? What was it? -Help for the unemployed - Awarded monetary contracts to private companies who hired employees to complete the products.
What was the TVA? What did they do? -Tennessee Valley Authority - created jobs in Tennessee.
What was the CCC? What did they do? -Civilian Conservation Corps-provided jobs, shelter, clothing and food to men' working on environmental projects.
What was the SEC? What did they do? -Securities Exchange Act of 1984 established the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) which regulates and oversees the market.
What was the Wagner Act? -Helped unions grow stronger
What were the largest unions? American Federal of labor ; Congress of Industrial Organization
What is the REA? What did they do? -Provided loans to member-owned electric corporations. Served rural areas and provided electricity.
What was the SSA? What did they do? -Social Security Act. An unemployment insurance program created pensions for retirees.
What is a Demagogue? -Leaders who manipulate with half-truth and scare tactics.
Describe what court packing is and describe how it did or did not help FDR. -Increase the number of Supreme Court Justices from 9 to 15. Did not help FDR, he faced significant backlash from Congress, the public, and some within his own party. Seen as a threat to the independence of the judiciary.
What was the minimum wage in 1938? -$.40/hour
What 3 things did the fair Labor Standards Act do? -created minimum work wage ($.40 hour) maximum work week (40 hours); placed child labor restricted on those under 16.
What was the unemployment rate in comparison to whites? -Unemployment rate for African Americans was almost double of white.
What is the Black Cabinet? -Roosevelt's unofficial group of advisors. Included Robert Weaver, William Hastie, and Mary McLeod Bethune.
What were women paid in comparison to men? -Women were paid about half of what men were paid.
Who is Eleanor Roosevelt? -FDR’s wife became a leader that pushed for women's rights and reforms.
Who is Frances Perkins? -Became first female Cabinet member when FDR appointed her security of Labor.

What was the Neutrality Act of 1935? -Prohibited the exportation of weapons to belligerent (warring) nations.
Who invaded Ethiopia and what did the US do in response to it? -Benito Mussolini invaded. The US banned weapon shipments to Italy.
What year did Adolf Hitler gain power in German -1933
Where were the 1936 summer olympics held? -Berlin
When did WWiI begin in Europe and why? -In 1939, Germany invaded Poland.
Describe the Neutrality act of 1937 -Banned the sales of weapons and war materials to belligerent nations.
Describe the Neutrality act of 1939 -Allowed nations at war to buy US Military supplies as long as they paid for them in cash and transported them on their ships.
