Appropriations | Legislation earmarking funds for specific purposes |
Cabinet | a group of advisors to the president that include the heads of the 15 top level executive branch departments |
censure | a punishment for a member of Congress and can lead to a loss of some of their power or seniority. a formal condemnation of an individual |
civil case | concerns a private matter between a person or group and taking legal action against another person or group. punishments typically have to do with paying restitution or damages to the plaintiff |
criminal case | the government or state is the plaintiff and taking legal action against a person or group. The burden of proof rests on the state. Punishments can include probation, fines, and jail time |
Defendant | an individual or group being sued or charged with a crime |
electorate | all of the people that are eligible to vote |
electors | one of the 538 people appointed by a state in presidential electrons for major candidates |
electoral college | the group name for the 538 presidential electors required by the constitution to form every four years for the sole purpose of electing the president and vice president |
extradition | the process when a state or nation formally requests another state or nation to send an individual charged with or convicted of a crime in that jurisdiction |
plaintiff | a person or group filing a lawsuit |
political appointee | a person selected to a federal position by the president |
popular vote | the number of actual votes for a candidate or an issue |
president | the head of state and head of government of the United States of America. Responsible for directing the executive branch of the federal government the commander in chief of the US armed forces |
primary election | a preliminary election in which voters of each part nominate candidates for office, party officers, etc |
state of the union | required by Article 2 sect. 3 of the constitution. the annual message from the president to the Congress and reports on the budget, news, goals, and achievements |
supremacy clause | establishes that the federal constitution, and federal law generally, take precedence over state laws, and even state constitutions |
supreme court | the only office in the US with a lifetime appointment and the final appellate court of the US judicial system |
treason | the only crime specifically stated in the constitution and includes |
writ of certiorari | an order from a higher court to a lower court to see the records and proceeding of a previous case. |
