| Manifest Destiny | the idea that the United States had been set apart for the special purpose of extending its boundaries all of the way to the Pacific Ocean - possessing the entire continent which was given to them |
| Tejano | Mexican that claim Texas as their home |
| empresario | people who received land from the government for trying to get other people to move to Texas |
| decree | an official order |
| annex | to take control of |
| rancho | a large amount of property (land) sold to Mexican settlers by the government |
| ranchero | ranch owner |
| Californios | Mexicans that lived in California |
| ceded | gave |
| forty-niners | those who went to California looking for gold |
| boomtown | new communities that were built very quickly (almost overnight) |
| vigilante | concerned citizens, who wanted to protect themselves, took the law into their own hands, acting as police, judge, jury and sometimes executioner |
