Lesson 33 - West Africa

1. Where did Islam spread in the 7th century? Islam spread quickly through the Middle East and North Africa.
2. How did Islam first reach Ghana? Islam first reached Ghana through Muslim trade and missionaries.
3. What Muslim holidays are celebrated in West Africa? West Africans began celebrating Muslim religious festivals like the festival of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
4. What did West African Muslims believe to help protect people from harm? They used amulets, or charms, that they believed helped people or protected them from harm.
5. What did West African kings do after converting to Islam? They started to exercise more control over local rulers.
6. What was Timbuktu famous for? Timbuktu became famous for its Islamic scholars and remained an important center of learning until the 1500s.
7. Why did West African start to learn Arabic? The Qur’an was written in Arabic so all Muslims were expected to read the Qur’an and memorize parts of it.
8. Describe a traditional West African home. Most traditional houses in West Africa were round with cone-shaped, thatched roofs.
9. What did Muslims use calligraphy for? Muslims used calligraphy to decorate objects with words or verses from the Qur’an.
10. What materials was used to build in West Africa? West Africans used mud and wood to build mosques.
