Alveoli | Air sacs in the lungs in which gas exchange occurs |
Mediastinum | Cavity in the center of the chest that contains the heart, major blood vessels, esophagus, and trachea |
Intercostal muscles | Muscles located between the ribs |
Residual volume | Volume of air remaining in the lungs after maximal expiration |
Vital capacity | Maximal amount of air that can be moved in and out of the lungs |
Tidal volume | Amount of air moved in or out of the lungs while at rest |
Dead space | Areas where gas exchange cannot occur, such as the bronchi or bronchioles |
Apnea | Temporary cessation of breathing |
Eupnea | Normal respiration |
Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea | Sudden shortness of breath at night that causes a person to wake up gasping for air and is usually relieved in the upright position; common in people with left-sided congestive heart failure |
Bifurcation | Division into two branches |
Aspiration | Passage of food, fluid, or other foreign material into the trachea and lungs |

Expectorant | Medication that thins secretions in the airways and loosens up mucus to facilitate productive coughing |
Antitussive | Cough suppressant |
Cromolyn sodium (Intal) | Prophylactic medication for asthma that works by inhibiting mast cell secretions that promote inflammation of the respiratory passages; it cannot be used to treat an acute attack |
