Early Reform Movements

| American Anti-Slavery Society | An organization created by William Lloyd Garrison whose members wanted immediate emancipation (freedom from slavery) and racial equality for all African-Americans. |
| Underground Railroad | A network of people who helped thousands of enslaved people to escape to the north by providing transportation and hiding places. |
| Sectionalism | A devotion to the interests of one geographic region over the interests of the country as a whole. |
| Seneca Falls Convention | The first national women’s rights convention held in 1848 at which the Declaration of Sentiments were written. |
| Declaration of Sentiments | A statement written in 1848 and signed by women’s rights supporters at the Seneca Falls Convention which detailed their beliefs about social injustice against women. |
