The Cold War

QuestionAnswer
Yalta Conference A meeting between leaders of the Allied powers that resulted in a plan for peace after World War II.
Marshall Plan The idea that the United States could help rebuild war-torn Europe with loans and other economic aid.
Communism An economic system in which resources are owned by the government, and wealth is divided among citizens equally.
Cold War A period of hostility between western powers and communist powers.
Containment A foreign policy that attempts to stop the spread of communism without ending it in the countries in which it already exists.
Truman Doctrine A policy attempting to contain the spread of communism, beginning with military aid to the monarchies of Turkey and Greece.
Arms Race A growth of weapons based on the number of weapons an enemy country has.
Berlin Wall A barrier of concrete and barbwire between communist East Berlin and West Berlin.
Domino Theory The idea that communism would spread rapidly throughout Southeast Asia.
Tonkin Gulf Resolution Congressional authorization given to President Johnson in 1964 to send combat troops to Vietnam.
