SOL CE9 Judicial Branch

TermDefinition
Due Process The constitutional protection against unfair governmental actions.
Jurisdiction Authority to hear a case.
Felony A serious crime.
Misdemeanor A less serious crime.
Miranda Rights The statement that police must read, telling you of your rights.
Judge The person who oversees the rules of court.
Jury The 12 people who decide your guilt or innocence.
Verdict The term that describes the jury's decision.
Plea You state whether you are guilty or innocent.
Civil Complaint A case about money or rights.
Criminal Complaint You are accused of breaking the law.
Arraignment A plea is entered and evidence is examined to see if the case is valid.
Appeal Asking a higher court to look at the verdict and reconsider.
Bail Money given in order to get out of jail while you await your trial.
Judicial Review The right for courts to look at the Constitutionality of laws.
Marbury vs. Madison The court case that established Judicial Review.
Supremacy Clause No laws can violate the Constitution.
District Court The court that hears misdemeanors and low dollar civil suits.
Circuit Court The court that hears felonies and high dollar civil suits.
Double Jeopardy (5th) Being charged with the same crime, twice.
Cruel or Unusual Punishment (8th) No punishment can be excessive.
