Great Depression

TermDefinition
installment buying A way of paying for something by making a series of small payments over a long time.
tariff A tax on goods coming into or leaving a country.
overproduction Producing more of a product than what is needed or wanted.
depression A time when the economy gets worse and many people do not have jobs.
loan Money that is borrowed from a bank and promised to be paid back.
debt Money that is owed to a bank, person, or company.
unemployed Shantytowns or homeless encampments where people lived during the Depression.
Dust Bowl A period of major dust storms across the Great Plains caused by drought, overfarming, and erosion.
New Deal FDR's plan to help the country recover from the Great Depression.
unemployed Not having a job.
soup kitchen A place where hungry or unemployed people could get a meal.
hooverville homeless encampments or shanty towns
hobos homeless men who often "hopped" trains to move around the country during the Great Depression
