Great Depression
| Term | Definition |

| installment buying | A way of paying for something by making a series of small payments over a long time. |
| tariff | A tax on goods coming into or leaving a country. |
| overproduction | Producing more of a product than what is needed or wanted. |
| depression | A time when the economy gets worse and many people do not have jobs. |
| loan | Money that is borrowed from a bank and promised to be paid back. |
| debt | Money that is owed to a bank, person, or company. |
| unemployed | Shantytowns or homeless encampments where people lived during the Depression. |
| Dust Bowl | A period of major dust storms across the Great Plains caused by drought, overfarming, and erosion. |
| New Deal | FDR's plan to help the country recover from the Great Depression. |
| unemployed | Not having a job. |
| soup kitchen | A place where hungry or unemployed people could get a meal. |
| hooverville | homeless encampments or shanty towns |
| hobos | homeless men who often "hopped" trains to move around the country during the Great Depression |
