Great Depression

installment buying | A way of paying for something by making a series of small payments over a long time. |
tariff | A tax on goods coming into or leaving a country. |
overproduction | Producing more of a product than what is needed or wanted. |
depression | A time when the economy gets worse and many people do not have jobs. |
loan | Money that is borrowed from a bank and promised to be paid back. |
debt | Money that is owed to a bank, person, or company. |
unemployed | Shantytowns or homeless encampments where people lived during the Depression. |
interest | A percentage that is added on to a loan or money borrowed from a bank. |
Dust Bowl | A period of major dust storms across the Great Plains caused by drought, overfarming, and erosion. |
New Deal | FDR's plan to help the country recover from the Great Depression. |
unemployed | Not having a job. |
soup kitchen | A place where hungry or unemployed people could get a meal. |
hooverville | homeless encampments or shanty towns |
