Price Supports The maintenance of a price at acertain level through government interaction. instituted through McNary-Haugen Bill. They were put on key products like wheat, corn, cotton, and tobacco.
Hawley Smoot Tariff A law enacted in 1930 that established the highest protective tariff in U.S. history. It worsened the depression at home and abroad, it was designed to protect American farmers and manufacturers from foreign competition but had the opposite effect.
Dust Bowl the region including Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico that was made worthless for farming by drought and dust storms during the 1930's. It pushed people further west.
Direct Relief the giving of money or food by the government directly to the needy people, the relief given was often very meager.
Boulder Dam a dam built on the Colorado River, now called Hoover Dam, it was built during the Great Depression as a part of a public works program intended to stimulate business and provide jobs.
Federal Home Loan Bank Act a law enacted in 1931 that lowered home mortage rates and allowed farmers to refinance their loans and avoid foreclosure
Reconstruction Finance Corporation an agency established in 1932 to provide emergency financing to banks, life insurance company, railroads, and other large businesses, RFC authorized $2 million in emergency financing. In theory the money was supposed to trickle down but it didn't work
Patman Bill was abill that the bonus army tried to push for that would give them their bonuses early, it was shot down by Hoover and Congress
Glass-Steagall Act the 1933 law that established the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to protect individuals bank accounts
Federal Securities Act a law enacted in 1933 that required corporations to provide complete accurate info on all stock offerings.
Securities and Exchange Commission an agency created in 1934 that monitors the stock market and enforces laws regulating the sale on stocks and bonds
Agricultural Adjustment Act a law enacted in 1933 to raise crop prices by paying farmers to leave a certain amont of their land unplanted thus lowering production, it upset many Americans b/c food was being destroyed while people were starving,
National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) a law enacted in 1933 to establish codes of fair practice for industries and to promote industrial growth, Provided $4 million jobs and money for schools.
National Recovery Act NRA set prices of many products and established standards, aimed to promote recovery
Home Owners Loan Corporation provided government loans to homeowners who forced foreclosure b/c they couldn't meet their loan payments.
Federal Housing Administration gives loans for home mortgages and repairs
Deficit Spending a governments spending of more money than it recieves
Social Security Act a law enacted in 1935 to provide aid to retirees, unemployed, people w/ disabilities and families with dependent children. It was not a total pension system or complete welfare system and didn't provide a lot.
Parity pricing a government supported level for the prices of agricultural products, intended to keep farmers incomes steady
Speculation an involvement in risky business transactiona in an effort to make a quick or large profit. Many people began doing this and ignored the risks
