| empire | Land with different territories and people under a single rule |
| emperor | Name of the Roman ruler during the imperial age |
| patricians | the Nobles in Roman society |
| plebeians | the common people of ancient Rome |
| consuls | the two most powerful officials in Rome |
| senate | Roman officials who were appointed by the consuls |
| veto | to reject or prohibit actions and laws of other government officials |
| checks and balances | a system that balances the distribution of power in a government |
| Latin | the language of the Romans |
| arch | a structure that spans a space and supports structure and weight above it |
| aqueduct | a human-made raised channel that carries water from distant places |
| republic | A republic is a government in which citizens have the right to vote and elect officials |
| legion | Basic unit of the Roman army. Each legion had from 4,500 to 5,000 heavily armed soldiers. |
| civil law | a legal system based on a written code of laws |
| maniple | Each legion was broken up into maniples. A unit of between 60-160 Roman soldiers who formed a solid battle line. |
| constitution | A system of rules by which a government is organized. |
| magistrates | Elected officials who enforce the law. Rome was broken into three branches of government: assemblies, senate, and the magistrates. |
| tripartite government | A government with three parts. Example: Rome had assemblies, senate, and consuls. |
| province | an area of land under political control by a country, similar to a state or colony |
| toga | a garment that adult men wore wrapped around their bodies. Only citizens could wear togas. |
| pantheon | a Roman temple dedicated to all of the gods. |
| Colosseum | an outdoor amphitheater built in Rome around 70 A.D |
| centurion | a Roman officer in the military |
| greco-roman | having characteristics that are partly Greek and partly Roman. Specifically : having the characteristics of Roman art done under strong Greek influence |
| paterfamilias | the male head of a household or the father of a family. |
