| 3. What is a mosque and Imam? | A mosque is the muslim house of worship and an Imam is the leader of religious services for Islam. |
| 4. What group is called "people of the book"? Why? | Christians and jews are known by Muslims as people of the book because they are followers of monotheistic Abrahamic religions. |
| 5.What are 4 main similarities between the Abrahamic religions? | They all have a belief in one god, belief in an afterlife, they teach the same values, and follow the 10 commandments. |

| 1.Why was the Umayyad family disliked? | The Umayyad family was disliked by many because their focus wasn’t on the practice of the religion but on wealth. |
| 2.Why did Islam spread so successfully? | Islam spread successfully and developed an empire due to trade, conquest and war, and migration. |
| 3.What did the Sunnis believe about the four caliphs? | They believed that the first four caliphs were “rightly guided” and were the correct rulers of the Islamic faith after Muhammad died. |
| 4.What did the Shiites believe about the four caliphs? | They believe that only Ali, Muhammad’s son-in-law, should have succeeded Muhammad as caliph and was “rightly guided”. |
| 5.How were conquered people treated? | Conquered people weren’t treated as equals and given the same opportunities within the society by the Muslim empire. |

| 2. Who made up the 3 classes in Muslim culture? | Upper class - people born Muslim, 2nd class - converts to Islam, 3rd class - Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians, 4th class - slaves. |
| 3.How did cities advance Muslim culture? | Cities were the cultural center of Islamic learning and trade and symbolized the strength of the leader. |
| 4. How did Muslim culture impact math? | A mathematician wrote a textbook in the 800s explaining the technique called al-jabr—today called algebra. |
| 5.Why is astronomy important in Muslim culture? | Muslim interest in astronomy developed from the need to fast during Ramadan, perform the hajj, and pray toward Mecca. |
