| Militarism | Building up military to prepare for war |
| Alliance | Agreements to aid and protect other countries |
| Imperialism | The economis and political takeover of another country |
| Nationalism | Pride and devotion in your country, produces action |
| Trench Warfare | Fighting from a permanent trench system |
| Chemical Warfare | Using chemicals, such as mustard gas or chlorine gas, against an enemy in war |
| War Crimes | An action carried out during the conduct of a war that violates accepted international rules of war |
| New Weapons of WWI | Machine guns, tanks, Zeppelins, planes, poison gas, grenades, etc. |
| War of Attrition | Trying to wear down the enemy until they collapse and can no longer carry on with war |
| Theater of War | The region where fighting takes place |
| The Lusitania | Cruiseliner (ship) carrying civilians in 1915 that was sunk by a Germany U-boat |
| Zimmerman Telegram | Secret communication between Germany and Mexico asking Mexico to invade the US |
| Total War | Unrestricted warfare between enemies, no laws of war are regarded, all resources are mobilized for war |
| Triple Entente/Allies | France, Britain, Russia, and eventually the US |
| Triple Alliance/Central Powers | Germany, Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary |
| U-Boat | German submarines |
| Flamethrowers | Weapon that produces a jet of fire against an enemy |
| Doughboys | Nickname for Americans who joined the war in 1917, they were fresh and had not yet experienced war |
| Propaganda | Media used to publicize a political cause |
| Paris Peace Conference | Formal diplomatic meetings after WWI between the Allies, decided the fate of Germany |
| Treaty of Versailles | Officially ended WWI between Germany and the Allies, decided that Germany would take the blame for the war |
| League of Nations | The first worldwide intergovernmental organisation whose principal mission was to maintain world peace |
| Western Front | Area of military movement and war during WWI, from Belgium through France |
| Dugout | Shelter dug into the side of the trench |
| Platoon | A unit of soldiers |
| Trenches | Long, deep, narrow holes dug into the ground where soldiers would wait for fighting |
| Artillery | Weapon that fires projectiles |
| Duck-boards | Wooden boards on the ground of trenches that tried to prevent soldiers from getting their feet in water and mud |
| No Man's Land | Muddy, treeless stretch of land between trenches where fighting would take place, often bombed by planes, full of holes and barbed wire |
| Puttees | Cloth strips made of wool that wrapped around a leg and covered it from knee to foot |
| Parapet | Side of the trench that faced the enemy |
| "Stand Down" | Permission to leavea defensive position when attack is unlikely |
