European Settlement: Jamestown | The first permanent English settlement in North America was founded in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. This colony was originally welcomed by the Virginia Algonquians, the indigenous inhabitants of the area. |
European Settlement: AngloPowhatan Wars | The settlers, however, established their settlement in a agriculturally bad place, and depended on the Indians for survival. Eventually their demands on the Algonquians led to conflict and three AngloPowhatan Wars, in 1609, 1622, and 1644. |
European Settlement: The Plymouth Colony | The second successful English settlement in North America was the Plymouth Colony. In 1620, a group of English Dissenters—Christians who had separated from the Church of England—landed in Provincetown Harbor in Massachusetts. |
European Settlement: The Mayflower Compact | The Plymouth Colony established a social contract, known as the Mayflower Compact, and pledged themselves to work for the good of the colony. Earlier the Indians had been killed and enslaved by the English captain and slave trader Thomas Hunt. |
