| unethical | wrong and unacceptable according to rules or beliefs about morality |
| impeachment | charging a public official of wrongdoing a crime |
| pardoned | a release from punishment or crime |
| neutral | not taking a side |
| surplus | more products that are available than in demand |
| stock | a share of ownership in a company |
| depression | a period of low economic activity and high unemployment |
| great depression | a severe global economic downturn that affected many countries across the world. It started with a sharp decline in stock prices in the U.S. and lasted 10 years |
| pensions | grant money paid to people who have retires |
| centennial | the festival in 1936 marking 100 years since Texas declared it's freedom from Mexico |
| dust bowl | was the result of a period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the agriculture of the americans prairies during the 1930 |
| erosion | the gradual wearing away of something, such as soil |
| boom and bust cycle | a prolonged period of great profits followed by a sharp decline |
| decline | a recession in business income that typically occurs when consumers are spending less |
| foreclosures | the action of the bank taking back ownership of a property because the mortgagor fails to be able to make the payments |
| tenant farmers | a person who rents a plot of land from it's and pay's for it's use with crops |
| herbert hoover | the 31st president of the U.S. and was president when the Great Depression began |
| hooverville | derisive name for the name of camps made of cardboar where the homeless lived during the Great depression. Named after the president of the time, Herbert Hoover |
| franklin delano Roosevelt | the 32nd president commonly known as FDR he was the only president to serve more than 2 terms |
| new deal | a series of programs, public work projects, financila reforms, and regulations enacted by FDR in order to get out of the Great Depression |
| ensure | to make something certain or secure |
| lobbyists | a person who takes in part in an organized attempt to influence legislators |
| dictator | a ruler who has complete power over a country |
| fascism | a system in which the government has complete control over a country |
| empires | groups of countries united under the power of a single ruler |
| world war II | the second global conflict that lasted from 1939-1945. Most of the worlds countries including all the great powers, fought as part of two opposing military alliances |
| internment | confinement, especially during war time |
| radical | departing from tradition; innovative |
| rationing | limiting the amount of food and goods people can buy. often during war |
| bonds | a promise to repay with interest the amounts borrowed from the buyers |
| blackouts | when cities keep their lights off at night for safety during times of war |
| industrialization | the development of industry in a country |
| segregation | the separation of people by race |
| refugee | someone who is forced to leave their country because of danger |
| regulation | a rule created by the government that has the same effect as a law |
| expansion | the action of becoming larger or more extensive |
| alien | foreign-born residents of a country who have not yet become citizens |
| dwight d eisenhower | commonly known as Ike, he was the 34th president of the U.S. he was a 5 star army general before becoming president |
