| segregation | the separation of people by race |
| regulate | a rule created by the government that has the same effect as a law |
| suffrage | the right to vote |
| prohibition | a ban on the sale of alcohol |
| impeachment | charging a public official with wrongdoing or a crime |
| pardoned | a release from punishment for a crime |
| neutral | not taking a side |
| surplus | more products available than are in demand |
| stock | a share of ownership in a company |
| depression | a period of low economic activity and high unemployment |
| Great Depression | a severe global economic downturn that affected many countries across the world. It started with a sharp decline in stock prices in the U.S. and lasted for 10 years |
| pensions | grants of money paid to people who have retired |
| Centennial | the festival in 1936 marking 100 years since Texas had declared its freedom from Mexico |
| Dust Bowl | a series of dust storms that created an environment disaster in the western part of the United States in the 1930s |
| erosion | the gradual wearing away of something, such as soil |
| boom-and-bust cycle | a prolonged period great profits followed by a sharp decline |
| foreclosures | the action of the bank taking back ownership of a property because the mortgagor fails to be able to make payments |
| tenant farmers | a person who rents a plot of land from it's owner and pays for it's use with a share of the crops |
| Herbert Hoover | The 31st president of the United States (Republican) and was president when the Great Depression began |
| Hoovervilles | derisive name for the name of the camps made of cardboard where the homeless lived during The Great Depression. Named after the president at the time, Herbert Hoover. |
| Franklin Delano Roosevelt | he 32nd president of the U.S. (Democrat) commonly known as FDR He was the ONLY president to serve ,ore than 2 terms |
| New Deal | a series of programs, public work projects , financial reforms, and regulations enacted by FDR in order to get out of the Great Depression |
| ensure | to make something certain or secure |
| lobbyists | a person who takes part in an organized attempt to influence legislators. |
| dictator | a ruler who has complete power over a country |
| Fascism | a system in which the government has complete control over a country |
| World War II | The second global conflict that lasted from 1939-1945. Most of the worlds countries, including all the great powers, fought as part of two opposing military alliances |
| aliens | foreign-born residents of a country who have not yet become citizens |
| internment | confinement, especially during wartime |
| Dwight D. Eisenhower | commonly know as Ike, he was the 34th president of the U.S. (Republican) He was a 5 star army general before becoming president |
| radical | departing from tradition; innovative |
| rationing | limiting the amount of food and goods people can buy. often during war time |
| bonds | a promise to repay with interest the amounts borrowed from the buyers |
| blackouts | when cities keep their lights off at night for safety during times of war |
| industrialzation | development of industry in a country |
| refuge | someone who is forced to leave their country to escape danger |
| unethical | wrong and unacceptable according to rules or beliefs about morality |
| decline | a recession in businesses income that typically occurs when consumers are spending less |
| topsoil | the part of the soil where most plants have their roots |
| expansion | the action of becoming larger or more extensive |
| diverse | showing a great deal of variety |
