| Irony | to express something other than or especially the opposite of the literal meaning |
| Similie | Comparing 2 unalike things using 'like" or "as" |
| Metaphor | a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable |
| Alliteration | the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words |
| Allusion | an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference |
| Symbolism | an artistic and poetic movement or style using symbolic images and indirect suggestion to express mystical ideas, emotions, and states of mind |
| Imagery | visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work |
| Personification | the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something non-human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form |
| Onomatopoeia | A word capturing or approximating the sound of what it describes, such as buzz or hiss |
| Oxymoron | A figure of speech that combines two apparently contradictory elements, as in "jumbo shrimp" or "deafening silence" |
