| The Republic | A government ran by elected leaders chosen by the people. |
| Plebeians | Rome's lower class made up of artisans, laborers and farmers. |
| Patricians | Rome's upper class who held ALL of the political power. |
| Magistrates | Government officials who were elected. |
| Consuls | The title of the 2 most powerful magistrates. |
| Roman Senate | A council of wealthy and powerful Romans that advised the leaders. |
| Roman Assembly | A council that protected the rights of the Plebeians. |
| Veto | To prohibit actions by other officials (NO!) |
| Checks and Balances | A method of balancing power so that one group doesn't become too powerful. |
| Punic Wars | A series of wars between Rome and Carthage, a city in northern Africa. |
| Gladiators | A slave or captive, who was forced to fight to death in a public arena. |
| Roman Empire | A time in Rome when the GOVERNMENT was ruled by a DICTATOR (one person). |
| Julius Caesar | A great general who fought for the Plebeians' rights. |
| Caesar Octavian "Augustus" | Caesar's adopted son who became Emperor after Caesar's death. |
| Pax Romana | The Roman Golden Age |
| Aqueduct | Raised tunnels used to carry water from the mountains to the cities. |
| Constantine | The first Christian Emperor of Rome. |
| Attila the Hun | The leader of the Hun Empire that invaded the Roman Empire. |
| Byzantine Empire | The EASTERN Empire of the Roman Empire |
