| CRIME | any act that breaks the law and for which there is a punishment |
| FELONY | serious crimes such as murder and kidnapping |
| MISDEMEANORS | less serious offenses such as traffic violations and disturbing the peace |
| AGGRAVATED ASSAULT | any kind of physical injury that is done intentionally to another person |
| RAPE | the sexual violation of a person by force and against the person's will |
| BURGLARY | the forcible or illegal entry into someone's home or other property with the intention to steal |
| LARCENY | the theft of property without the use of force or violence against another person |
| ARSON | the destruction of property by setting fire to it |
| EMBEZZLEMENT | the theft of money that has been entrusted to an individual's care |
| FRAUD | cheating someone out of money or property |
| CAUSES OF CRIME | poverty, illegal drug use, permissive society, urbanization, social changes, lack of education, and sometimes no cause |

| WALKING A BEAT | refers to a police officer patrolling a specific neighborhood or area on foot |

| MIRANDA WARNING | remain silent, lawyer present for questioning, anything they say can be used against them |
| BAIL | the money a defendant posts as a guarantee that he or she will return for trial |

| ARRAIGNMENT | when the defendant enters a plea of guilty or not guilty to the charge |
| DEFENSE | lawyers for the accused or defendant |
| PROSECUTION | lawyers for the government |
| JURORS | people chosen from both sides to determine guilty or not guilty |
| WITNESSES | people sworn in to make statements about a case |
| AQUITAL | jury cannot unanimously reach an agreement |
| PLEA BARGAINING | the defendant may plead guilty to a lesser offense than the original charge |
| PAROLE | early release for good behavior |
| CAPITAL PUNISHMENT | death penalty |
| DELINQUENTS | juveniles who are found guilty of breaking a law |
| 1967 SUPREME COURT RULING FOR JUVENILES | juveniles have the same rights as adults except the right to a jury trial |
| PROBATION | a period of time during which offenders are given an opportunity to show that they can reform |
| BOOT CAMPS | run like the military and provide a highly disciplined environment |
| CRIMINOLOGISTS | people who study crime and the behavior of criminals |
