Road to Revolution

TermDefinition
The French and Indian War a war between the British and the French over land in America. -The British won-It put Britain into great debt.
The Proclamation of 1763 This was a statement that told the colonists they weren’t allowed to move west after the French and Indian War. It made the colonists very angry
The Stamp Act 1765 An act that taxed all types of papers and certificates including playing cards, marriage certificates, etc.
The Townshend Acts 1767 A series of acts that taxed glass, lead, paper, paint, and tea.
“Taxation without representation” the colonists’ belief that they should not be taxed without representation or a say in the British government, Parliament.
The Boston Massacre The event started with colonists harassing British soldiers and ended with 5 colonists dead.
Committee of Correspondence A committee of colonists who wrote letters and news articles to spread the word about Patriot causes and beliefs. They spread the word to Patriot voters about unfair acts from the British government.
The Tea Act Continued the tax on tea but also only allowed colonists to buy tea from the East India Company from Britain.
The Boston Tea Party A protest against the Tea Act. Patriots dumped chests of tea into Boston Harbor.
The Coercive Acts A series of acts that closed Boston Harbor and were put in place to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party.
The Quartering Act Part of the Coercive Acts - this is an act that allowed British soldiers into the homes of colonists. The colonists had to provide food, shelter, and transportation for the British soldiers.
Patriots This group of people supported the colonists’ cause
Native Americans This group of people fought mostly with the French during the French and Indian War.
