Nobility | powerful families that held fiefs and titles |
Heir | a person who will legally recieive the property of someone who dies; the person who will become king or queeen after the current king or queen dies or steps down. |
dynasty | a family or line of rulers, a succession of sovereigns of a country belonging to a single family or tracing their descendents to a common ancestor |
vassal | a person who recieves land from a ruler and in return promises to fight for the ruler. |
knight | a soldier on horseback who serves a king or other ruler. |
lord | a person with power and influence who controls land given to him by a king. |
fief | a plot of land exchanged for loyalty to a ruler. |
feudalism | a system of government in which land is exchanged for loyalty and services. |
King | the male ruler of an independent state, especially one who inherits the position by right of birth. |
Queen | the female ruler of an independent state, especially one who inherits the position by right of birth. |
Serf | a person living on a feudal estate who was required to work for the lord of the manor; cound not leave the estate , a person who is tied to land and not free. |
manor | A large country house and its surrounding land. |
manor estate | an area of land, or property, associated with the manor in the feudal system. |
village | a group of houses and buildings, smaller than a town, in a rural area associated with the manor and included in the manor estate. |
courtier | a noble who was part of the royal court and advised the ruler (king, queen, or dauphin) |
successor | a person who becomes king, queen, or leader after the recent leader's death. |
code of chivalry | a set of rules or behavior for Knights. |
