Feudalism Vocabulary

Fuedalism and Society Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Nobility powerful families that held fiefs and titles
Heir a person who will legally recieive the property of someone who dies; the person who will become king or queeen after the current king or queen dies or steps down.
dynasty a family or line of rulers, a succession of sovereigns of a country belonging to a single family or tracing their descendents to a common ancestor
vassal a person who recieves land from a ruler and in return promises to fight for the ruler.
knight a soldier on horseback who serves a king or other ruler.
lord a person with power and influence who controls land given to him by a king.
fief a plot of land exchanged for loyalty to a ruler.
feudalism a system of government in which land is exchanged for loyalty and services.
King the male ruler of an independent state, especially one who inherits the position by right of birth.
Queen the female ruler of an independent state, especially one who inherits the position by right of birth.
Serf a person living on a feudal estate who was required to work for the lord of the manor; cound not leave the estate , a person who is tied to land and not free.
manor A large country house and its surrounding land.
manor estate an area of land, or property, associated with the manor in the feudal system.
village a group of houses and buildings, smaller than a town, in a rural area associated with the manor and included in the manor estate.
courtier a noble who was part of the royal court and advised the ruler (king, queen, or dauphin)
successor a person who becomes king, queen, or leader after the recent leader's death.
code of chivalry a set of rules or behavior for Knights.
