Agency ability to make choices; to have control, even if limited, over life, your body, and your choices
Freedpeople the formerly enslaved masses of people who had been released from slavery by the Emancipation Proclamation or through freeing themselves through running away to Union soldiers.
Emancipation Proclamation an executive order (a law passed by the President under certain conditions) in 1863 that "freed" all the slaves in the states that had formed the Confederacy
Primary Source A historical document that was created at or near the time of the events studied, by a known person, for a known purpose.
Historiography the study of the methods of historians in developing history as an academic discipline.
