Constitution
| Term | Definition |

| Alexander Hamilton | A leader of the federalist party who pushed for the creation of the constitution and the national bank. |
| Amendment | A law added to the constitution designed to protect the rights of Americans. |
| Anti-Federalist | A person who believes state governments should be stronger than the central government. |
| Articles of Confederation | The first set of laws for the U.S. government. Kept the central government weak. |
| Bicameral Legislature | A congress with two houses. |
| Bill of Rights | The first 10 amendments to the Constitution. |
| Branches of Government | The way the powers of the government are divided (executive, legislative, and judicial) |
| Central Government/ Federal Government | The government that controls the whole country. |
| Checks and Balances | The way power is divided so that one part of the government does not become more powerful than the others. |
| Constitution | The set of laws that says what the government can and cannot do. |
| Constitutional Convention | The meeting of representatives where the constitution was created. |
| Continental Congress | The group of representatives from each state who came together to create the Declaration of Independence and Articles of Confederation. |
| Federalist | A person who believes the central government should be stronger than the state governments. |
| Federalist Papers | Arguments made for the creation of the Constitution |
| Great Compromise | An agreement between big and small states that the legislative branch would have 2 parts, one where all states were equal and one based on population. |
| Powers | What the government is allowed to do. |
| Representative | A person elected to make government decisions for the people of a state or country. |
| State Government | The government that controls an individual state. |
| Thomas Jefferson | A leader of the anti-federalist party who wrote the declaration of independence and pushed against the creation of a constitution. |
| Three-Fifths Compromise | An agreement between slave and free states that slaves would count as 3/5ths of a person in the population (effects the number of representatives in congress) |
| Union | Coming together under one government. |
