Western Expansion

QuestionAnswer
Louisiana Purchase The United States purchase of French land between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains in 1803 that doubled the size of the United States.
Manifest Destiny A belief shared by many Americans in the mid-1800s that the United States should expand across the continent to the Pacific Ocean.
Oregon Trail A 2,000-mile trail stretching through the Great Plains from western Missouri to the Oregon Territory.
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo A 1848 treaty that ended the Mexican-American War and gave the United States much of Mexico’s northern territory.
Homestead Act A 1862 law passed by Congress to encourage settlement in the west by giving government-owned land to small farmers.
Gadsden Purchase The United States purchase of land from Mexico in 1853 that included the southern parts of present day Arizona and New Mexico.
Erie Canal A canal that runs from Albany to Buffalo, New York that was completed in 1825.
Transcontinental Railroad A railroad system that crossed the continental United States.
Indian Removal Act A 1830 law passed by Congress that authorized the removal of Native Americans who lived east of the Mississippi River.
Trail of Tears An 800-mile forced march made by the Cherokee from their homeland in Georgia to Indian Territory which resulted in death of almost one-fourth of the Cherokee people.
