failed state a country whose political or economic system has become so weak that the government is no longer in control
genocide the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that group
humanitarian aid assistance that is used to relieve suffering during emergency situations
deforestation the clearing or severe thinning of a forest or other wooded area, leaving few or no trees
refugees a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster
civil war a war between citizens of the same country
scarcity something in short supply, a shortage
drought a period of dry weather, especially a long one that wipes out crops
oppression prolonged cruel or unjust treatment and control
misconceptions a view or opinion that is incorrect based on faulty thinking, myths, or misunderstanding
colonialism the practice of acquiring full control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and taking advantage of it economically
colonization the action of settling among and establishing control over native people of an area
segregation the action of setting someone or something apart from others
desegregation putting someone or something back together after being separated
desalination the process of removing salt from sea water
