ancient Greece

QuestionAnswer
City state A city with one ruler that controls the surrounding farmland.
Colony A settlement in a distant land.
Peninsula Land surrounded by water on 3 sides.
Isthmus Narrow strip of land that connects 2 other larger area of land.
Polis Ancient Greek city state.
Acropolis A wall built on the hill above the city where ancient Greeks built magnificent temples.
Port/Harbor A place where the ships docked to trade goods.
Temple A place where religious ceremonies were conducted outside.
Wall Used for protection.
Agora Marketplace where people went to buy and sell goods, talk and listen to speakers.
Theater A place where people went to watch plays/drama.
Stadium A place where people competed/played sports.
Mountains Isolated city states which make them independent of eachother and made trade and travel difficult.
Seas Used the seas to trade and travel to get goods and set up colonies in Rome and Asia minor for firtle land.
Monarchy Ruled by: Monarch How they ruled: Made laws, judged and lead the army. What led to decline: Wealthy overthrew the leader.
Oligarchy Ruled by: Aristocrats (2-3 wealthy men) How they ruled: Made laws that made them richer What led to decline: Leader of army took control
Tyranny Ruled by: Tyrants How they ruled: Made false promises and took power by force What led to decline: People of Athens wanted to try a form of government that shared power.
Democracy Ruled by: Male citizens How they ruled: They let citizens vote on every issue What led to decline: Does not end
How is a monarch different from a tyrant? A tyranny took power by force and a monarch inherited power
What difficulties did mountains create for the Greek city states? Really hard to travel on land Isolated people
What dangers were there when trading and traveling by sea? Attacked by pirates Rocky shoreline
Why did Greeks set up colonies? For farmland to feed their people
What goods did the Greeks trade from mainland Greece? Olive oil Pottery Wine
