6 Underground Railroad: A system of stops and safe houses that slaves used to escape to freedom in the North
7 Emancipation Procalmation: The presidential order that free all slaves in the Confederate states
8 The gettysbrug address: President Lincoln's famous speech at the end of the Civil war
9 Abraham Lincoln: The United States (Union) President during the Civil war
10 Jefferson Davis: president of the confederacy during the civil
11 Andrew Johnson: Lincoln's vice-president; he became president when Lincoln was assassinated
12 Border states: Delaware Kentucky Maryland, missouri west virginia Supported slavery but did not join the confederacy
13 Juneteeth June 19, 1865 marks the date when the last slaves were set free in texas
14 13th Amendment: Amendment added to the constitution that outlawed or banned slavery in the United States
15 14th Amendment: Amendment added to the Constitution that gave freed slaves U.S. citizenship
16 15th Amendment Amendment added to the Constitution that gave African-American men the right to vote.
17 Reconstruction 1865 - 1877, the time period after the Civil War when the Southern states were brought back into the union
18 carpetbagger A person from the North who traveled to the South to help or make money during the Reconstruction
19 scallywag A person in the South who supported the Nothern goal of freedom and rights for former slaves during Reconstruction
20 freemen's Bureau An organization set up by the goverment to help former slaves and poor whites during Reconstruction
21 10 percent plan President Lincoln`s plan to bring the Confederacy back to the Union
22 Radical Republicans Members in Congress during Reconstruction who wanted to punish the South and provide rights to former slaves
23 Ford`s Theatre Location in Washington D.C. where President Lincoln was assassinated.
24 Black Codes Laws passed in the Southern states during Reconstruction that discriminated against Black and Brown people
Redeemers Southern while Democrats who fought against Reconstruction and rights for freed slaves
