Church Reforms and the Crusades
What was the Spanish Inquisition? The Spanish Inquisition was a church court that tried people who weren’t Christian. They tried to convert all people to Christianity by giving two choices: give up their entire belief system and change to Christianity or die by being burned at the stake.
What were three problems that the Church faced and tried to reform during the European Middle Ages? Simony, which was the selling positions by church officials. *Priests were marrying and having families which was against Canon/Church law. *Church officials were more concerned with attaining material wealth than providing spiritual guidance.
Explain the two main effects/results of the Crusades on Western Europe. *Weakened the power of the Church and Pope bc people saw that the religious reason for fighting the Crusades wasn’t really true/only reason for fighting the Crusades. *Strengthened the monarchs/kings. *led to the decline of the Middle Ages. *trade+ learn*
Who was the Pope that issued the call for the first Crusade? Pope Urban II was the Pope that issued the call for the first Crusade. He also wanted to reunite Christianity, which had split into Eastern and Western branches. According to the pope, those who died in the Crusade were assured of a place in heaven
Explain the Crusades. The Crusades are a forceful example of the power of the Church during the medieval period. Overall, the Crusades grew out of the religious fervor, feudalism, and chivalry, which came together at the same time.
Changes in Medieval Society
Why was there a revival of learning from the 1100’s - 1400’s in Medieval Europe? The rediscovery of trade allowed people to learn from other people and civilizations again. *The writing of info in the vernacular allowed people to learn new info faster and the development of universities gave people a place to learn new knowledge.
Define the philosophy of Scholasticism. Scholasticism was the main philosophy of the Middle Ages. The philosophy was based on the belief that a person’s main goal in life was to be a good Christian, follow the teachings of the Church, and to reach heaven.
What was a guild and what did it do? A guild was an organization of individuals in the same business or occupation working to improve the economic and social conditions of its members. The development of guilds changed the European economy.
What was the Commercial Revolution? The Commercial Revolution was the expansion of trade and business. The improvement in both trade and finance increased the availability of traded goods and created new ways of doing business which changed life in Europe.
What was the advance in agriculture that had to do with the three field system? The 3 field system allowed farmers to grow crops on 2/3 of their land instead of just 1/2 the land each year. More forests were cut down for new fields. As a result, food production increased, villagers had more to eat,+people could resist disease- health
The Development of England
What was the importance of the Magna Carta? The Magna Carta was a document that gave the lords in England their rights back and put limits on the power of the king. It made people realize that they should have basic legal rights. The Magna Carta became the foundation for the average citizen.
What was England's parliament? England’s parliament was made up of the House of Lords and House of Commons. The parliament had more power over the king than France’s legislative body.
What was the Model Parliament? Edward summoned 2 burgesses from every borough + 2 knights from every county to serve as a parliament. Knights, burgesses, bishops, and lords gathered. This was called the Model Parliament bc of its new makeup of commoners, & lords, & it served as a model
What were some causes of the problems under King John’s rule? He was cruel to his subjects and tried to squeeze money out of them, he alienated the Church and threatened to take away town charters guaranteeing self-government, and John raised taxes to an all-time high to finance his wars.
Who was Henry II? Henry II ruled England from 1154 - 1189. Henry created the royal courts of justice by sending royal judges to every part of England at least once a year. Henry also created the use of a jury system in England.
The Development of France
What was the Capetian Dynasty? By the year 1000, France was divided into about 47 feudal territories. The Capet family ruled only a small territory, but at its heart stood Paris. Hugh Capet began the Capetian Dynasty of French kings that ruled France from 987 to 1328.
What was the French Estates General? France’s Estates General was made up of the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st Estates. Both England’s Parliament and France’s Estates-General were early attempts to develop democratic principles and the idea of some checks and balances on the king’s power.
How did France become a separate kingdom? Hugh Capet and his descendants were weak rulers, but time and geography favored the Capetians. Their territory, though small, sat astride important trade routes in northern France. The power of the king gradually spread outward from France and the growth
What did Philip II want and what did he do? Philip II was one of the most powerful Capetians. Philip earned the name Augustus because he greatly increased the territory of France. He seized Normandy from King John in 1204 and within 2 years gained another large territory.
What were the steps to democracy? The creation of common law and court systems was a first step toward increased central government power. Including commoners in the decision-making process of government was also an important step in the direction of democratic rule.
Turmoil in the 14th Century and the Decline of the Middle Ages
Why did the Hundred Years’ War bring an end to the Age of Chivalry? The Hundred Years’ War ended the Age of Chivalry due to the invention of the longbow. The longbow changed how wars were to be fought. The training for knighthood became obsolete when someone could easily be killed from a distance.
What was the effect that the Great Schism had on the Roman Catholic Church? The division over the leadership of the Church which was based on who should be the true Pope greatly weakened the Church. As a result, people lost confidence in the Church’s ability to lead them.
What was the Great Schism? The Great Schism was arguments about which man holding the position of the pope was the true pope. It was finally resolved when all three popes were forced to resign, and a new pope was elected.
Where and when did the Bubonic Plague/Black Death occur? During the 1300’s, an epidemic or deadly disease called the bubonic plague struck parts of Asia, North Africa, and Europe. This disease killed approximately one-third of the European population.
What were some reasons for the decline of the Middle Ages? The 1300 and 1400’s were filled with disasters for the Medieval world. The Church divided, the Bubonic Plague, and Hundred Years’ War were all factors that caused the decline of the Middle Ages.
