Church Reform and the Crusades
1. What are 3 examples of Romanesque architecture in churches? Round arches, a heavy roof held up by thick walls, there was very little light within the church, dark and gloomy, and small in size.
2. Who issued the call for the first Crusade? Pope Urban II called for the first Crusade.
3. What was the main goal of the Crusades? They wanted to recover the holy city of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the Muslim Turks.
4. What is one effect of the Crusades? Weakened the power of the Church and Pope, strengthened the monarchs/kings, and led to the decline of the Middle Ages
5. What is one problem the Church tried to reform? Simony was the selling of positions by church officials, the marrying of priests and having families, and Church officials were more concerned with attaining material wealth than providing spiritual guidance for the community
Changes in Medieval Society
1. Why was there a revival of learning from the 1100’s - 1400’s in Medieval Europe? There was a revival in learning because the rediscovery of trade let people learn from one another. The writing in the vernacular let people access information.
2. What were three changes that took place in Medieval society? There was a rediscovery of trade, there was a rediscovery of learning and education, and the creation of cities became hubs of trade and education.
3. What was one result of the second agricultural revolution on Medieval Europe? The second agricultural revolution increased the food supply and led to an increased population.
4. What is Scholasticism? The philosophy was based on the belief that a person’s main goal in life was to be a good Christian, follow the teachings of the Church, and to reach heaven.
5. What is a guild? An association of people who worked at the same occupation.
England Develops
1.Who created the royal court of justice and jury system in England? Henry II created the royal court of justice and jury system.
2. Who did the Magna Carta originally intend to defend? The Magna Carta protected the rights of English nobility.
3. Why was the Magna Carta important? The Magna Carta was a document that gave the lords in England their rights back and put limits on the power of the king. The Magna Carta became the foundation for citizens eventually believing that they should have certain legal freedoms and rights.
4. What is the legislative body in England? England’s parliament was made up of the House of Lords and House of Commons.
5. What were the causes of problems under King John's rule? He was cruel to his subjects and tried to squeeze money out of them, alienated the Church, and raised taxes to finance his wars.
France Develops
1. What is the legislative body in France? France’s Estates General was made up of the Third, Second, and First Estates.
2. How does French Estates differ from English Parliament? French Estates had less power over the king than England did.
3. Who was the duke who began a dynasty of French kings that ruled France? The duke was Hugh Capet.
4. What were similarities between Parliament and Estates? They were both early attempts to develop democratic principles and the idea of some checks and balances on the king’s power.
5.What dynasty began in France in 987? The Capetian Dynasty began in France in 987.
The Troubles
1. What were events that led to the decline of the Middle Ages? The Crusades, the Bubonic Plague, the Hundred Years’ War, and the Great Schism
2. Why did the bubonic plague spread so easily throughout the European population? The people were unclean, there was no sanitation system, and there was no garbage system.
3. Why did the Hundred Years’ War help to bring an end to the Age of Chivalry? This war brought an end to chivalry because of an invention called the longbow that could easily kill someone from a distance.
4. What was the effect that the Great Schism had on the Roman Catholic Church? The great schism separated branches of christianity which made it so if someone followed the christian orthodox ways they would be excommunicated from a roman catholic society.
5. How many people got killed from the bubonic plague? Western Europe had 20-25 million deaths, China, India, and other Asian areas had 25 million deaths, and other areas had 4 million deaths.
