| Pataliputra | Capital city of the Mauryan Empire; later it became the capital city of the Gupta Empire |
| Ashoka | After many wars, committed his life to spreading Buddhist teachings; his laws promoted peace in the family & good deeds |
| stupas | Buddhist shrines; shaped like domes, or burial mounds |
| Chandragupta l | The first Gupta ruler; he ruled for 10 years |
| Samudragupta | Son of Chandragupta l; expanded the Gupta Empire; entered India into a Golden Age |
| pilgrims | People who used the trade routes to visit many holy sites; famous temples grew wealthy from so many visitors |
| Mahabharata | An ancient religious epic, or story; told stories about great heroes |
| Bhagavad Gita | One of the best known sections of the Mahabharata; "Song of the Lord" |
| Aryabhata | One of the first scientists to have used algebra |
| Vedas | Taught correct and acceptable behavior |
| metallurgy | The science of working with metals in their production and purification |
| golden age | a time of peace and prosperity |
| zero | Mathematicians from the Gupta Empire invented the symbol "0", without which computers could not exist |
