STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER

QuestionAnswer
What are atoms made of? protons, electrons, and neutrons.
What are the 2 areas of the atom? nucleus and electron cloud.
What subatomic particles are found in the nucleus? protons and neutrons.
What is the atomic number of an atom? it is the identity of the atom. It is equal to the number of protons.
What is the atomic mass of an atom? it is the sum of the protons and neutrons.
What is an atom? an atom is the smallest unit of matter.
What are pure substances? elements and compounds are. They cannot be separated by physical means.
what are non-pure substances? homogenous and heterogenous mixtures are. You can separate them by physical means. Example: filtration, decantation, etc.
What is a homogeneous mixture? In this mixture you cannot see individual components. Example: salt water, blood, milk, air.
What is heterogeneous mixture? In this mixture you can easily see and separate the components. Example: granola bar, salad, soup.
Water density is 1g/mL. What happens to an object with a higher density than water? the object will sink. Example: Regular Coca-Cola.
Water density is 1g/mL. What happens to an object with a lower density than water? the object will float. Example: Diet Cola, wood, plastic.
What is Quantitative Data? Data that includes numbers. Example: 10 miles, 25 g/ml, 5cm3.
What is Qualitative Data? Data that includes descriptions. Example: the coffee is hot, the book is red.
What are some examples of physical properties? mass, volume, flexibility, density, melting point, and boiling point.
Which physical properties are useful to identify a substance? density, melting point, and boiling point because they don't change with the amount of sample.
What are elements made of? they are made of atoms of the same type. There are a finite number of elements (119).
What are compounds made of? they are made of 2 or more elements. Example: water, table salt.
What are some examples of chemical properties?? flammability, corrosivity, reactivity.
What is melting point? is a physical property. it involves the change in state, from solid to liquid.
what is boiling point? is a physical property. It involves the change in state, from liquid to gas.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
