| Nationalism | an intense loyalty and pride in one's country |
| Propaganda | artfully drawn posters/newspaper ads whose goal was to get people to fully support the war effort |
| Contraband | goods whose importation, exportation or possession is illegal |
| Lusitania | a British cruise liner traveling from NY to England that was sunk by german submarines. 128 Americans died |
| Alliance | A mutual defense agreement between counties |
| Imperialism | A policy held by a country of increasing power & wealth by acquiring additional territories, usually by force. |
| Triple Aliance | Germany, Italy & Austria-Hungary |
| Gavrilo Princip | Shot and killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand |
| Espionage | Spying, especially to gain government secrets |
| Draft | to select a person at random for mandatory military service |
| Ethical | Conforming to accepted standards of conduct, good behavior |
| Prestige | admiration and respect because something is successful or important |
| Convoy | a group that travels with something, such as a ship to protect it |
| Adequately | sufficiently completed to its minimum requirements |
| Resolve | to come to an agreement |
| Reparations | Payment by the losing country in a war to the winner for the damages caused by the war |
| Treaty of Versailles | Required Germany pay financial reparations, disarm, lose territories and give up overseas colonies - ended the war. |
| Central Powers | Known as Triple Alliance (Germany, Italy & Austria-Hungary) |
| League of Nations | an international organization with a mission to maintain world peace |

| Artillery | military's heavy firearms |
| Mustard Gas | dangerous type of gas, garlicky scent, yellow in color, experience burning eyes, skin, nose and lungs. |
