Alliance | Countries that support one another during conflict |
Nationalism | The belief that your country is the best |
Imperialism | The policy of acquiring territories or controlling other countries to gain natural resources and new markets. |
Militarism | Competing to build the strongest military |
Propaganda | Persuasive messages found in posters and songs meant to encourage people to help support or hurt a cause. |
Lusitania | A British passenger ship, sunk in 1915 by a German U-Boat. |
Zimmermann Telegram | A secret message sent from Germany to Mexico and intercepted by the British. |
Assassination | The murder of a high-profile individual. |
Reparations | Money paid to cover damages caused by war |
Treaty of Versailles | Negotiated by the "Big Four" (Britain, France, Italy, and the US), this treaty outlined the terms of Germany's surrender. |
14 Points | This speech, given to Congress in 1918, outlined Wilson's plan for global peace. |
League of Nations | An alliance meant to promote peace and international cooperation. |
treaty | An agreement between two or more countries. |
neutrality | Not taking either side in a conflict. |
U-boat | A submarine; able to stealthily dispatch battleships. |
Isolationism | The policy of staying out of global affairs. |
