imigration- sifton sifton had aggressive, "open door" immigration policy that adverised to "desirable" countries. none liked it, and eng cads were very racists, frnch cads no want bcs the french culture wud be over run. still many new non english settlers came tho.
immigration- oliver oliver later becomes the minister, and changed the policy so that he cud slow the flow of non english settlers. he was "restrictve, exclusive, and selective". the restrictions limited jews and asians exc. he made the chinese head tax, limiting other races
(M)AIN causes military: there was an arms race between the countries armies builds creating tension
M(A)IN causes alliance systems: countreis had created many alliances systems with one another, saying if one goes to war then all go to war. this escalated the conflict, creating it larger then was needed.
MA(I)N causes imperialism: when you go into another nation and exploit them through power or by force. germany tried to exploit africa and brit was threatened that germany suddenly was wanting/gaining more power.
MAI(N) causes Nationalism: believing that ypur country is the best/better then all. putting you countries before any others. brit had belived that other places resources was more importnat than the countries themselves
The Road to WW ONE tense bosnia, A-H, & serbia, when franz ferdinand (from A-H) was killed by the black hand (who fought for serbian independance), A-H gave serbs ultimatum, give us black hand or we invate, and A-H invades serbia.
the pattern of attack Russia helps serbia by attacking A-H, and germany attacks russia, then france attacks germany, then germany attacks france by going thru belgium. going thru belgium causes brits to join and attack germany.

schlieffen plan germany fighting a 2 front war, decided to take france quickly as russia was mobbilizing themselves, cut through belgium for a surprise attack . wanted to cut thru belgium but enforced treaty of belgium & brit. leader took shortcut to paris, & is defeated
war tech (WW1, chem) Cl gas used, led to the creation of gas masks and new techniques for mass killing and obstruction of view. meteoroligists were sudenly important to predict where gas would be moved because of the wind. was first introfuded to cad during battle of ypres.
war tech (WW1, infantry) machine guns were a good way of stopping infantry trying to cross no mans land, & artillery led to phone lines being hidden underground to protect them from the dangers of war. artillery assisted in making new war tactics like the creeping barrage.
war tech (WW1, tanks) tanks were used to cary navy ppl thru enemy lines, and defensive & offensive utility. used in cads 100 days as shield and initial bombing
war tech (WW1, underwater) submarines, new navy tech, had been made to starve brit by cutting off their food ships on the waters by germany. new war boatrs were developed, and new defences agianst underwater threats like underwater mines.
war tech (WW1, air) airplanes, were armed and dropped bombs unto the enemy lines and trenches, and led battle ships into battle.
battle of ypres first major cad battle, where cads were deserted by the french algerians, and germans used gas against cad for first time. more than 10k men died waiting for brit reinforcements, helped confirm cads as strong and reliable, holding the front for days.
battle of passchendaele mud everywhere, and conditions were unbearable, ppl drown in mud. lead by arthur currie who is cad general and they defeated the germans in this immposible battle.
battle of the sommes machine guns used in mass, and gore. bad plan by general Haig (brit that controlled cads. strategy to run at guns and overpower). newfoundland regiment killed, and caused cad givn to push personal control bcs brits dont care.
vimy ridge cads bombed germans weeks (stops sleep), soldier's tired. moths prepared & set gravel, use creeping barrage, prepare 3-4 ppl for 1 task. led by currie. death was high, but cad generals were commanding cad groups, and this built cads reputation in battle.
taxes (WW1) taxes implemented for first time in cad to fund the war, first temporary, then became permanant.
conscription (WW1) needed for cad bcs death toll was so high and no one was volunteering, so laurier took the side of conscription, borden was on oppisite side, and he won the next elections
camps (WW1) detention camps were for ppl sus to the govn, like immigrants from A-H, and the war measure act allowed cad govn to arrest ppl w/o trial. then ppl were arrested that were innocent, but bcs ppl didnt like the, like ukrainians
women (WW1) women ran country w/o the men, and many worked in munition factories, and took care of kids at the same time. this allowed women to realize that they had value and stuff, pushing the later actions for gender equality
the zimmerman telegram "'I was literally supplying you with goods & shit and you pulled this shit on me?? Ain't no way Imma let that slide, square up bitch come at me' [US to Germany after Mexico shows telegram] & was defining moment for US who finally picked side in this war"
treaty of versailles limits the german military, navy, and airforce (the germans have proud army). germany gives up saars region. germany has to pay winners for the rebuilding of their countries after the war.
chanak affair brit wanted cads help in chanak turkey, and Makenzie King didn't want cad in another war, therefore said no. first time telling the brits no. crazy
balfour decliration king told the brits to sign a paper saying the commonwealth countries were equal to brit. even more independance after the chanak affair.
king/byng affair king won election with minority, and felt bad and asked for a reelection. byng said no, king quit, and arthur meigan took over but he felt bad so he asked for reelection, byng aggreed, and king won with majority govn.
statute of west minster states that cad has their own diplomatic relationships without brit and stuff
cause 1 of great depression 1. dependance of cad on the natural resources for exports: no one had been buying cad products bcs of war debt, therefore less income and mass lay offs ensued. more unemployement that didnt help.
cause 2 of great depression 2. dependance of cad on the US as trade partner: US pulled out of trades to focus on their own economy, US collapsed, and cad collapsed with them w/po their trade partner (heir pookie ookie wookie)
cause 3 of great depression 3. uneven distribution of wealth: either u wud be really rich or really poor, no in between. no middle class exsisted to direct the goods to.
cause 4 of great depression 4. over production and the inability to get products to consumers: no one was buying products, meaning they just sat in warehouses, and there was lots of prducts in storage, meaning no labour hirings was needed to make more products. more unemployement.
cause 5 of great depression 5. buying on credit: ppl taking out loans and investing in stocks too easily, & making back their $$ quick. bcs of stupid financial desicisons, ppl wud invest all their money in one stock, and when black tuesday occured, everyone lost all their money.
cause 6 of great depression 6. speculation on the stock market: when investors noticed that the value of stocks and money invested was very different, they panicked and started selling stocks. mass amount of stocks was sold, leading to the crash and on black tuesday
bennets- conservatives they ended laissez faire, and started the new deal trying to save the prime minister reign for him. he created relief camps and was blamed for the depression in the last election
king-liberals he wanted to wait out the depression, amd lowered tariffs, encouraging free trade, he shut down relief camps, and did the five cent speech.
J.S. Woodsworth-CCF wanted a socialist govn, and started/was encouraged in SAM provinces by the impoverished farmers and those impacted by people who wanted the regina manifesto.
social credit party started in alberta, and gave out 25 bucks coupon monthly to help ay for living expenses during the depression. very "five year old child solves world hunger" type of solution.
Duplessis- Union Nationale he defended the french culture and pushed for provincial independance, beliebong the depression showed the differences between the poor french and rich english
Tim Buck-CPC was the red menace, and put into jail until post depression. pushed for communism, and wanted to start a revolution, changing cads entire economic system. was the organised workers and unemployed.

Hitler Youth raised generations of children teached them to dedicate their lives to hitler. the jew children were isolated, and the young german soldiers were much stronger then alliedsoldiers, because they had been training since youth.
strength through joy propaganda, and distraction of the german population to their losing rights. was motivating the workers
economic policy uniins, strikes, worker rights banned, and german labour front was made to talk to govn for better laws, but the labour front was ran by the govn. work books were needed, and only given to wanted ppl (not jews and marginalized communities).
workers society work hours increased, and the wages decreased. frozen wages and interest rates alo begun to prevent inflation. as well, ppl cudnt buy from companies outside of germany.

battle of dunkirk the first mistake by hitler, and allowed a large number of allied forces to escape france, and the germans. hitler gave the go thru for bombing the allies too late, and there was two days of just fog, and then allies were gone.
battle of britain germans had been repetivly bombing brit, but then stopped, which is 2nd big mistake of hitler, who allowed a cease in the bombings of britain, which allowed them enough time to gather their resources and attavk germany
operation barbarossa attack on the soviet union, was delayed bcs of italy fail to take greece, had to attack during winter. germans almost had moscow, wudve made it, but hitler said go to middle east instead, then turned to take stalingrad (symbolic). largest battle in WW2.
battle of dieppe the raid on dieppe was horribly planned, and cad was sent to steal enigma machine, failed, but pushed for cad independance.

battle for berlin allies bombed berlin into death, and the S.S. allowed themselves to be bombed, bcs they had sworn to protect hitler not germany. in the end germany fell bcs no one protected the country, they only protected hitler

battle of hong kong first operation for the cads, and the invasion of japanese began after the pearl harbor bombings. cad failed briliantly
battle of ortona taking ortona had meant taking rome, and cads invented mousholing, and won the city. slayed really hard. was very bloody.
battle of Sicily the start of the italy campaign, and aided by operation mincemeat, diversion of the german troops from soviets, and mussolini is dragged, the italians supported the war until it actually came into their country now they dont like.
Hiroshima/Nagasaki the atomic bomb is dropped bcs more death wudve been rather than land invasions, ppl who invented the bombs didnt support after bcs of all the deaths and stuff. thenagasaki bomb was dropped when japan wouldnt stop after the first hiroshima bomb

UN (United Nations) made after WW2 by US soviets brit france. china to stop a WW3. replaced the league of nations, and cad wasnt there bcs of US opposition. they vote on resolutions, and each have one veto.
suez canal crisis egypt tried get canal, thats bad, soviets supported them, gave weapons and stuff. french and brit are fighting egypt, but US public supports egypt, but supporting them meant siding with societs, US didnt wanna, so peackeepers mitigated the conflict
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) alliance btw US cad and other nations to counter the soviets and communism. countered the warsaw pact in 1955, btw societs and 7 eastern europe nations. basically alliance systems from WW1, but with nukes and two world superpowers against each other
NORAD (North American Air Defence Command) US and cad created, and defended from potential nukes from societs. if there were nukes found in the cad radars, US wud fire their nukes (if one is hit and dies, so does the other).
MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) missile detecting system that on both sides would alert them if a nuke was fired, and they wud fire in retaliation, kills all. any attack on the other from the opposite nation allows a nuke strike.
pearson he created the UN peacekeepers. was PM for while. gave options for flags. wanted blue on the flag alot.
Diefenbaker he was PM when the avro arrow (a super sonic jet designed to intercept bombers from soviets. the project was cancelled though bcs of cold war ending, and costs. US didnt want cad to have more progress in tech, and convinced them to end it.
St. Laurent cad PM that didnt like communism, and thought US was the only one that cud end communism
trudeau #1 he implemented the war measures act during the FLQ crisis. he wanted to bring back constitution, and tried to make everyone sign, but quebec wanst there, and caused tension.
meech lake accord saying that quebec is distinct society, 3/9 supreme judges are quebecois, changes to constitution needs agreement from all provinces. quebec has control over own imigration policy. didnt pass.
quebec referendum referendum on if quebec sould have sovereignity, but no won very VERY close. bouchard led the parti quebecois.
charolettetown accord cad version of meech lake accord. aboriginal self govn, senate reform, includes he cad clause (constitution helps needs of cads & their govn, build languages in minorities), invalidates the bill 101. quebec help referendum to stop the accord.
