The Byzantine Empire
Why did Justinian have to rebuild the city of Constantinople? Justinian had to rebuild the city because of barbarian invaders.
What is Justinian's greatest achievement? His greatest achievement is Justinian's Code.
What kind of leader was Justinian? (ex. monarch, dictator, ...) Justinian ruled as an autocrat.
What were two reasons for the fall of the Byzantine Empire? The plague killed many people and decreased the population, the constant attacks from the Muslim Turks made the Empire weak, and the Ottoman Empire conquered the Byzantine Empire.
What were two legacies from the Byzantine Empire? The passing on of Greek and Roman knowledge, autocratic rule, and Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
Charlemagne Unites Germanic Kingdoms
What did the decline of the western Roman Empire lead to? It led to an era called the Middle Ages or the medieval ages.
What are two examples of what the Middle Ages had its roots in? The heritage of Rome and Greece, the Roman Catholic Church, and the customs of Germanic tribes.
What were the five changes caused by Germanic Invasions? Disruption of trade, the downfall, of cities, population shifts, the decline of learning, and the loss of a common language.
What was one of Charlemagne's greatest accomplishments? One of his greatest accomplishments was the encouragement of learning.
Why did the empire divide into three parts in 843 AD? The empire got divided because Charlemagne's three sons fought for control of the empire.
Feudalism and Manorialism
What is feudalism? Feudalism is a system based on rights and obligations.
How did someone's social class get decided? Their social class was normally inherited.
If serfs tended to a lord's land, what did they normally get in return? Serfs got housing, farmland, and protection.
What makes a manor self-sufficient? A manor has fields, pastures, a manor house, a church, and a workshop.
What are the levels of the social class structure? Monarchs, lords or nobles, vassals, knights, then serfs.
Society in the Feudal Era
Who was eligible to become a knight? Only noble boys could become a knight.
What were the steps to become a knight? First you were a page, then a squire, finally if you pass all of the physical and mental tests, you could become a knight.
What values were a knight supposed to live by? Knights were supposed to be brave, honest, respectful, loyal, and compassionate.
Who were a knights masters? Knights had three masters. These were their lord, their god, and their lady.
What was the role of a woman in feudal society? Noble women could rule the land while their husbands were away, but couldn't inherit land. Peasant women worked in the field and took care of their families.
The Power of the Church
What was a monastery? Monasteries were religious communities and centers for learning how to become a priest, nun, or church official?
Why was the church the most dominant institution? The church was the most dominant institution because they were the only people who were taught Greek and Roman knowledge and could read and write Latin and Greek.
Why didn't the church share knowledge? They taught the knowledge to each other so that they were the only people who could read and interpret the Bible.
What was the goal of everyone in the Middle Ages? Everyone's goal was to reach heaven?
What does someone need to do to get excommunicated and what were effects of getting excommunicated? People were excommunicated for questioning or challenging the church. If you were excommunicated you couldn't attend church, you couldn't receive sacraments, you couldn't get a proper burial, and your soul could never enter heaven.
