Term | Definition |

Sociology | The social science that studies human society and social behaviors and aspects. |
Function | A positive consequence that an element of society produces for maintenance of the social system. |
Theories | Systematic explanations of the relationships among phenomena. |
Dysfunction | A negative consequence an element has for the structure and stability of the social system. |
Symbol | Anything that stands for or represents something else and has a shared meaning attached, such as language, culture, gestures, sounds, events, physical objects, or other elements. |
Macrosociology | A level analysis of large scale social systems, or even society as one; employed by the functionalist and conflict perspectives. |
Microsociology | An analysis that delves more in depth into specific facets of social systems and functions, as well as everyday interactions between group members. Employed by the interactionist perspective. |
Globalization | The development or implementation of social, political, and economic alliances that stretch worldwide. |
Scientific Method | An objective, systematic, logical method of collecting empirical data and arriving at satisfactory conclusions based upon facts and data previously gathered. |
Hypothesis | A statement that predicts the relationship between two or more variables, or the outcome of something. |
Variable | A characteristic or detail that can differ from any one individual, group, or situation to another in a measurable way. |
Correlation | Refers to the direct link of when one or more objects, people or variable change, another variable also changes due to the interrelation. |
Survey | A form of research that consists of data on attitudes and opinions being collected from a large quantity of people in order to reach a conclusion. |
Sample | Small but representative selection of people, chosen to represent a majority, which is studied in a survey or other means of research. |
Historical Method | A research method that involves examination of any elements or events from the past that contain contents of sociological interest. |
Content Analysis | The research method that involves the analysis of existing sources, involves counting the number of times a word, phrase, idea, event, a symbol, or another element appears in any given context. |
Participant Observation | Method of research in which researchers get directly involved with the topic or issue that is under investigation. |
Case Study | An intensive review of a person, group, event, or issue. |
Experiment | A research method in which information is gathered under controlled circumstances and conditions set by the researcher. |
Statistical Analysis | Method of research that involves analyzing data that has or may have already been gathered to determine the strength of the relationship that may exist between two or more given variables. |
