| New South | period after Reconstruction where the South sought to diversify GA's economy & bring Northern technology and/or investments into the state |
| Populist Party | political party made up of farmers who were hostile to banks, railroads, & social elites |
| Rural Free Delivery Act | legislation proposed by GA Congressman Tom Watson that provided free mail delivery to rural areas of the country |
| convict lease system | a system that provided convict (prisoners) labor to private businesses such as railroad companies & planatation owners |
| Jim Crow laws | laws created by legislatures to deny African Americans citizenship rights |
| separate but equal | U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized racial segregation as long as the facilities were equally funded |
| literacy test | a disenfranchising tactic that required voters to pass a reading & writing test in order to vote |
| poll tax | a disenfranchising tactic that required voters to pay a fee in order to vote |
| grandfather clause | a disenfranchising law that said if a person's father (or grandfather) could vote before the Civil War, he would be able to vote as well |
| disenfranchisement | to deprive a person the right to vote or other rights of citizenship |
