U.S. Constitution in Action

QuestionAnswer
Federal System A system that divides powers between the states and the federal government.
Legislative Branch The division of the government that includes congress, and proposes bills and passes them into laws.
Executive Branch The division of the government that includes the president and administrative offices and enforces the law.
Judicial Branch The division of the government that is made up of the national courts and interprets laws.
Checks and Balances A system established by the constitution that prevents any branch of government from becoming too powerful.
Majority Rule The idea that policies are decided by the greatest number of people.
Impeachment The process used by a legislative body to bring charges of wrongdoing against a public official.
Veto To cancel, or void a law.
Executive Orders Non-legislative directives given by the president in certain circumstances that have the force of law.
Judicial Review The Supreme Court’s power to declare acts of Congress unconstitutional.
