Progressive Era

TermDefinition
Muckrakers A group of writers during the progressive era who tried to expose the problems that existed in American society as a result of the rise of big business, urbanization, and immigration.
The Jungle Upton Sinclair's infamous novel of 1906 about the meat industry.
16th Amendment Allows federal government to collect income taxes.
17th Amendment Gives voters the power to elect their senators.
19th Amendment Gives women the right to vote.
Women's suffrage movement Was the struggle for women to vote and run for office and is part of the overall women's rights movement.
Progressives Favoring or advocating change or reform socially, politaclly and economically.
Theodore Roosevelt 26th president, went into office during progressive era fought against Big Business and monopolies.
Conservation Movement First nationwide movement. Movement of conservational problems such as waste, pollution, resource exhaustion, and sustainability. Muck Raker - John Muir
Square Deal The 3 c's. Conservation of natural resources, control of corporations, and consumer protection.
Progressive Era The Progressive Era (1896–1917) was a period of politcal, social and econimc reform across the United States. It was focused on defeating corruption, monopoly, waste, working conditions, living conditions, child labor and other areas of concern.
Reformer Those who worked directly within the cause or movement aimed at reforming a perceived problem.Politicians
Politicians Political leaders who tried to push for reform legislation
Tenement low-rise apartment buildings, known for cramped spaces and poor living conditions
Ghetto a poor urban area occupied primarily by a ethnic/minority group.
Sweatshop having poor working conditions, unfair wages, unreasonable hours, child labor, and a lack of benefits for workers.
Temperence movement a social movement promoting the prohibition of alcoholic beverages
18th Amendment Prohibition - outlaws the sale and distribution of alcohol
settlement house organizations that provided support services to the urban poor and European immigrants, including education, healthcare, childcare, and employment resources.
Labor Union an organized group of workers who unite to make decisions about working conditions
Sherman Anti-trust Federal law that outlawed monopolies
Pure Food & Drug Act required accurate ingredient labeling and prohibited the sale of adulterated and misbranded food and drugs
U.S. Forest Service enforcement of federal laws and regulations governing national forest lands and resources
Federal Child Labor laws ensure that when young people work, the work is safe and does not jeopardize their health, well-being or educational opportunities
Upton Sinclair Muckraker - Author of "The Jungle" that exposes the meat packing industry
Jacob Riis Muckracker - Photgrapher and author of "How the other half lives" which exposes city tenement housing and homelessness
Thomas Nast Muckraking cartoonist who exposed Boss Tweed for his corruption
Lewis Hine Muckraker - Photographer who exposed child labor conditons
Jane Addams Reformer - established the Hull House to help with poor immigrants assimialte into society
Susan B. Anthony reform leader of the womans suffrage movement
Samuel Gompers Reformer - founder & president of the American Federation of Labor AFLa workers Union
William "Boss" Tweed NYC corrupt politician who created a political machine with kick backs (bribes) for political support
Al Smith politican who aimed to improve labor practices of factory workers
John Muir Reformer - conservationist and environmentalist who founded the Sierra Club. Worked to create the National Parks
Ida Tarbell Muckracker - teacher and journalist who exposed Rockfeller and Standard Oil for their monopoly
