| Peat | The material that is made from very old, decayed plants that burns like coal. |
| Steppe | A large plain of dry grassland. |
| Methane | A colorless, odorless natural gas released from carbon. |
| Tundra | Flat, treeless land found in arctic and subarctic regions. |
| Nonrenewable Fossil Fuels | A source of energy such as oils, natural gas, or coal that is in limited supply. |
| Semiarid | Somewhat dry, with very little rainfall. |
| Socialism | A system of government in which the government controls economic resources. |
| Tribute | fees paid to another ruler or country for protection, a token, or submission. |

| collective farm | a large farm where workers grew food to be distributed to the entire population. |
