| Pesticide | A chemical that kills harmful insects and weeds. |
| Landmass | A very large area of land. |
| Greenhouse Gas | A gas that traps the sun's heat over Earth. |
| Permafrost | Permanently frozen ground. |
| Hydroelectric Power | A source of energy that uses flowing water to produce. |
| Arid | Very dry, having almost no rainfall. |
| Taiga | The largest forest area that stretches through northern Russia, Canada, and other northern countries. |
| Peat | The material from old decaying plants that burns like coal. |
| Steppe | A very large plain of dry grassland |
| Methane | a colorless, odorless natural gas released for carbon. |
| Tundra | flat treeless land found in the arctic and subarctic |
| Nonrenewable Fossil Fuels | A source of energy such as oil, natural gas, or coal that is limited supply |
| Semiarid | Some what dry, with very little rainfall |
| Socialism | A system of government in which the government controls economic resources |
| Tribute | Fees paid to another ruler or country for protection or as a token of submission. |
| Invader | An enemy who enters a country by force |
| Propaganda | information made to influence people's opinions or advance an organization's or party's ideas |
| State | A defined territory with its own government |
| Czar | Term used for emperor in Russia |
| Communism | A system of government in which a single political party controls the government and the economy |
| Scorched Earth Policy | In 1812, practice in which Russian troops, as they retreated from Napoleon's army, burned crops and resources that could supply the enemy. |
| Reign | A period of rule for a king, queen, emperor, or empress |
| Secular | Worldly, not connected to a religion. |
| Serf | From the 1500s to the 1800s a poor Russian or European peasant farmer who rented land from a landlord and had few rights. |
| Collective Farm | In the Soviet Union, a large farm where workers grew food to be distributed to the entire population |
| Strike | Work stoppage by employees who refuse to work. |
