Local geography terms (Grade 3)

QuestionAnswer
Valley A LOW AREA between hills or mountains, typically with a river or stream flowing through it.
Mountain A LARGE natural ELEVATION of the earth's surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level.
River A large natural flow of water that RUNS THROUGH the land into a lake, ocean, or other body of water.
Ocean A very large expanse of SEA (the main areas into which the sea is divided).
Lake A LARGE BODY of WATER surrounded by land.

Peninsula A piece of land ALMOST completely SURROUNDED by water.
Bay A broad INLET of the SEA where the land curves inwards.
Island A piece of land SURROUNDED by WATER.

Hill A naturally raised area of land, NOT AS HIGH or craggy as a mountain.
